Developers thoughts about IE9

Web devs thoughts about IE9

One of Microsofts "evangelists" came by Future of Web Design in London last week and gave a talk about the current state of Internet Explorer.

He started off by showing a really funny clip about what web devs think about IE. He did his best but I still thinks MS has the wrong approach. They leave their old browsers to die instead of updating them as Google does.

Cohesion in code and design

This principle of cohesion is one example of how designers and programmers face similar problems in the different software layers. It would be smart for the two to collaborate early in the design process so that decisions about how to cohere the functions of the app can run up and down the stack, from UI to controller to model to data store.

Is it possible to do a complete redesign of a web app

 28Dec

Is it possible to completely redesign a web app?

I use Highrise every day. It's is the best contact manager app I've ever had. Yesterday 37signals announced that they are going to roll out a new design of the app in the beginning of 2010.

When we launched Highrise in 2007, we piggybacked on the visual design and layout of Basecamp. That design has served us well over the past few years, but we never felt the layout was optimized for Highrise.

This is something I've thought about a lot. If you have a web app with thousands of users, is it possible to make a huge redesign? Won't people (non web geeks) be angry when they can't find a button they push every day.

It will be interesting to see how they'll handle critics. It won't be possible to use the old layout once the new is in place. And no, your company can't pick the date. You are in the hands of Jason Fried.

This is how it will be from now on with Software-as-a-Service instead of traditional software. Is it a bad thing? I don't think so. I don't want to go back to a world with version incompatibility, upgrades etc.

More screenshot and info can be found at 37signals product blog.

Update: The new layout has been rolled out. I'm not actually a huge fan of it yet and a lot of voices are demanding the "old look" in the forum.

We're throwing a web design competition

I'm tired of web platforms such as Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla etc. It should be a fun experience to design and build a website. That's why we built Snowfire.

Now we're ready to let you (awesome web designer) create a web site and integrate it with Snowfire. We're throwing Get Real, Get Visual - a web design competition. Design a web page and win a DSLR camera, iPad or the hottest web design book (Hardboiled Web Design).

You won’t receive my attention today

 15Oct

You won’t receive my attention today

This is how my inbox looked this morning

“Get free use of Xero”
“Google Apps News: October 2010”
“IMPORTANT: Your Free Assistly Trial expires today”
“Share your email marketing tip and win!”
“Chargify: Our Promise to You”
“Your week with Gowalla — Friends, Highlights, and New Places to Go”

The email subjects might be written by smart people at Google, Shopify, Chargify etc. but I’m busy and to receive them in a stack like this just makes me click the “delete all” button.

Edit: I did actually read the last one from Gowalla since it was a beautifully designed email.
